Luxury is the most abused word in this category, so it is worth saying what we mean by it and what we do not. We do not mean expensive, and we do not mean ornate. We mean a piece that holds up when you look at it closely.
The close look
Most of what separates a considered piece from an ordinary one is visible from about thirty centimetres. How an edge is finished. Whether a surface is even. Whether the weight matches what the eye expects when you pick it up. These are the things photographs hide and daily use reveals.
Restraint over decoration
A room reads as expensive when a few things are very good, not when many things are trying. One sculptural piece on an otherwise clear console will do more than a full shelf. The empty space around an object is part of what makes it register.
Finishes and light
Reflective and metallic finishes are the fastest way to add richness and the fastest way to overdo it. One or two in a room, placed where light can reach them, will lift it. More than that and the room starts to glare rather than glow, particularly under strong daylight.
Buying fewer things
The most reliable route to a room that feels considered is to buy less and wait. A space with three pieces you chose carefully will always read better than one filled quickly. This is the part of the process we are most useful for.
Everything in this selection earned its place on finish and proportion rather than on price.
